Any single commercial entity that strives to become a global standard will end up in Microsoft's shoes. The key is to develop standards independently of applications, so all can benefit from the common understanding without being restricted to one "platform" or another. Only in this way can development and innovation proceed as quickly as it can. By emphasizing one "platform" over another, developers jump this way and that way, instead of proceeding along the straightest possible path to the realization of their goals. By developers I mean not just software programmers, but individuals and businessess of all kinds who seek to provide a "better mousetrap", or even a new kind of mousetrap. Any single commercial standard is limiting, and keeps us from reaching our potential. Choice is freedom.
