After discovering yet another detail of the Mozilla build environment that I was unfamiliar with, I wondered aloud on #developers how long it would take until I knew at least the bare essentials. After all, I’ve been at this for almost a year already. In response, Mark Yen (Mook) pointed to this illustration:

This begged the question of what the Mozilla curve looks like. Someone suggested it might be similar to that of Emacs, but if you ask me it’s more like this:

  1. Learning curves

We did some joking about learning curves on #developers with plasticmillion and Mook, and plasticmillion blogged about it, citing a cute comparison of editor learning curves pointed out by Mook, and an Escher drawing giving his impression on the Mozill…

  2. I’ve been in charge of the Mozilla build system for several years and I still learn new things about it on a regular basis.

  3. What’s amazing about large projects like Firefox is that nobody knows everything, most people don’t even know everything about the part they are working on.

Makes for a very interesting experience.

IMHO that’s the fun of it…. you can always learn something. I’d much rather something like that. Each time you get something new out of it.

  4. True, one of the most exciting things about joining the Mozilla community is coming to terms with such a complex and multifaceted project. Of course, it’s still stress-inducing when the build that’s been running flawlessly for months suddenly craps out with a cryptic error message. :-)
