5…4…3…2…
In a few hours AllPeers is going to be released in the wild after 5 months of private testing. We did not invite all the testers during that phase but rest assured the remaining one will receive an email when the application is available.
We know some people have high expectations about this product so maybe it is time for me to put a few things straight:
1/ AllPeers is still a beta product so don’t expect it to be perfect (yet).
2/ Some features have not make it into this version so they will come out later; they include Chat, Comments, Tagging, support for external torrents.
3/ AllPeers is for sharing privately with friends and family; not for massively distributing files amongst strangers.
I’m very proud of the development team. They have created certainly what is the most ambitious Firefox extension to date (more than 200,000 lines of C++ and JavaScript) and the result is impressive, cool and useful!
I am using AllPeers everyday and have stopped attaching files to email (this is soooo 2005). I also love our ability to drag and share any picture off the web but my favorite feature has to be the ability to send a webpage to my friends just by drag and drop.
Finally before our young company moves to another phase of its life, I would like to personally thank all the private testers who gave us their time and some very valuable feedback to help us make AllPeers better and better. This is just the beginning…
Blog Bonus: While waiting for the launch, feel free to have a look at the AllPeers Product Tour which will go live with our new site.
UPDATE: AllPeers will be made available directly from the official Firefox extensions website. We are now waiting for them to upload it on their servers and since this is outside of our control we cannot promise any specific ETA.
UPDATE: Matt here. There were a few issues with getting up on the Firefox extension site since AllPeers is one of the first larger extensions to be hosted there, but the folks there have got the situation well in hand. It’ll be up very soon. I’ll post again in a couple of hours with a (hopefully definitive) update. Thanks for your patience!
UPDATE: Yay, I hacked the WordPress database and managed to get the post back (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, just ignore me). If you left a comment on my temporary post that wasn’t about my temporary post, please resubmit.

Just one side note: The “Product Tour” doesn’t work (at least on linux with Flash Player 7.0.63). It loads the player, I click the window, it changes to black background with a white “loading…”, the gray loading bar is filling as well as the playbar, but the “loading…” stays until it reached the end where it goes back to “click to play”.

[…] More P-P2P goodness coming your way. After Zapr, it is time for AllPeers to make its debut, and it should be anytime now, according to an entry on the company blog. It has been one of the most talked about products, and it is a Firefox plugin which allows you to transfer big files easily. I am looking forward to playing with it. Michael Copeland has a great profile on the company that is based in Oxford, England, and is backed by Index Ventures, the same folks who funded Skype. AllPeers development team is in Prague. […]

Yeap, there is a reason why they´re waiting mozilla to realesed it. It is a 4Mb extension, can you imagine how much bandwith it would consume if it were to be taken from here ?
Comment by Getulio Junior — 8/24/2006 @ 7:00 pm
Well, this is taking quite a while, isn’t it? I’m anxious to try out this new software, and see if its really as practical as they say. There are countless other ways I could share files easily, but if this one is more convenient, I’ll consider it as an option.
Comment by Zork — 8/24/2006 @ 7:32 pm
Rumor has it that this doesn’t really exist…
On the other hand…if you were to say, follow this link http://www.allpeers.com/download/indexf.htm and install the xpi….and maybe when it asked for a registration number…you were to enter in 12 random alphanumeric characters…you’d probably be in…
Comment by Lucas — 8/24/2006 @ 8:05 pm
Well, it does exist! But its a bit lame to blog about it being available in a few hours when thats clearly not the case.

Ok, my 2 Cent to Allpeers:
I find the idea of closed filesharing groups very good, but do you bundle it with a *webbrowser*? Why not a standalone application? I would install it instantly but in combination with firefox it’s a bit annoying…

[…] Straight from Ars Technica: “Last December, I wrote about a team that was constructing a plugin for Firefox called AllPeers. Claiming that their product would be “The best thing to happen to Firefox… since Firefox,” the AllPeers plugin promised to make file sharing between friends easy and efficient. At the same time, supporters of the service proclaimed that it would protect its users from lawsuits from the RIAA and MPAA due to its darknet architecture. Now, after many months of development, AllPeers is finally ready to unveil its technology to the world. The application is scheduled to be released later today, albeit in beta form. According to the AllPeers CEO and project leader, Cedric Maloux, the plugin represents more than 200,000 lines of C++ and JavaScript code.” […]

By the way, Jeremiah, double-clicking on a word is supposed to select that word. And if you don’t let go after the second click, you can drag to select the whole sentence or paragraph. It’s very handy when you copy and paste a lot.
