1… Zero!
A little over 24 hours and more than a few gray hairs later, the extension is now officially online and working on all platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux). Many thanks to Mike Shaver and the whole Mozilla crew for saving the day. You can find the first AllPeers public beta on the official Firefox extensions site. Sorry again for any inconvenience caused by these teething pains.
Just to reiterate what Cedric said in his last post, this is still a beta and we’re keen to hear about any suggestions you have for improving AllPeers. We’ve built a fabulous foundation (if I may say so myself) so you can expect to see rapid progress from here on out. I’ve seen a lot of questions of various stripes here and around the blogosphere. I’ll get a FAQ out as soon as possible that addresses them all and gives some more insight into our long-term plans.
Update: Yes, our registration server is a bit overwhelmed right now. Please be patient if you are having difficulty getting through to register or restoring your account. We’re working on increasing the capacity of the server.

It would be nice if one could disconnect from AllPeers without shutting down Firefox entirely.

First impression: great, expect of one disturbing detail: the “AllPeers Navigator” Button at the top right uses far too much browser real estate. Please put just “All Peers” BELOW the icon, then it’s ok.

Doesn’t seem to work on FreeBSD… The “Next >” button on the registration screen doesn’t do anything. =[

I was just wondering if you planned on having a forums somewhere. That way people can have a place to discuss their issues if they are having any problems.

If a folder is shared with several people, can they also help with uploading like bittorrent, or is it only single seed to one peer ?

Is there any public id who is online and sares some files? Just to check if it is working or not!

It does not work under FF2.0? The login/registration form displays correctly but when I click Next nothing happens.
Comment by js — 8/25/2006 @ 10:02 am
I have win2k and firefox 1.5.0.6, and I can’t register because the Next button does nothing.
That’s a bug or a configuration issue?

Great extension for a great browser. Well done and congrats to the development team. I’d love to see two features added in the next release: ability to disable the plugin in options (not uninstall) and the ability to hide the taskbar icon.

Only XP for Allpeers users ?

I installed allpeers on firefox 1.5.0.5 (debian). When i try to register, the next button blocks and the javascript console said :
AllPeers Exception: [Exception… “Component returned failure code: 0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED) [apIRegistrationClientService.register]” nsresult: “0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://allpeers/content/peer/Registration1.js :: anonymous :: line 116″ data: no]
AllPeers Exception: chrome://allpeers/content/peer/Registration1.js
Line 116, NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED
AllPeers Message: Component returned failure code: 0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED) [apIRegistrationClientService.register]
If someone have an idea…
(sorry for the spam).

Comment by mike — 8/25/2006 @ 6:46 pm
I also am getting the javascript error. Firefox 1.5.0.6 on a sindows XP machine on a domain (shouldn’t make a difference, but can). I have the folowing extensions:
Talkback 1.5.0.6
Firebug 0.4
IE Tab 1.0.9.5
Reload Every 1.5.1
Adblock Plus 0.7.1.2
SessionSaver .2 d1 * nightly 30
AllPeers Beta 0.50
It does sometimes give me the “Oops it looks like too many people…” message. And once It told me that my username, ‘nfriedly’ was taken. I find this unlikely. Immediately after that I tried a different username with the same email address (the one im using here) and it told me that my email address was taken. Every other time since then it has just hung when I clicked next.
Also, I tried the Restore my existing account link and entered my email and it either gave me the “oops..” message, did nothing, or told me that it
“There is no account matching…”
it also had this JS error:
uncaught exception: [Exception… “Component returned failure code: 0×8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) [apIAccountRestoreClientService.requestAccountRestoreByEmail]” nsresult: “0×8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://allpeers/content/peer/apPeerRestoreAccount1.js :: anonymous :: line 55″ data: no]

I want to use it on 2 computers, but I can’t use the same accout for both, and i cant create 2 accounts with 1 email address.
Comment by Kabel — 8/25/2006 @ 7:55 pm
Finally I could test it! It looks nice, however, as atm I can only have internet using a LiveCD, I would have to login to AllPeers every time again. Unfortunately this is not possible. Hope you’ll implement a way to login from multiple browsers soon, as I use PortableFirefox for Windows on other computers too. Good luck with AllPeers

@Anonymous : it works perfectly for me …
Comment by Stef — 8/25/2006 @ 9:42 pm
I agree with Lulu this “restoring account” business has got to go. I’m about ready to give up.

I am using Flock and every time I try to register, I get the following message:
“Oops! It looks like too many people are trying to register and our server is experiencing heavy traffic. Please try again in a few minutes.”
Can there really be that much traffic so that the server can’t complete a registration operation? If this is really the case, Allpeers must be really successful, but they need to fix this problem.

PPK: does it work at all on Flock? I’d love to avoid having to use Firefox just for AllPeers.
Comment by CJF — 8/25/2006 @ 10:39 pm
even though it says BETA i think its a bit too early for this release. instead of giving productive imputs people end ranting not being able to log.
btw it wont let me register @#^%@#^%$&^%#$%&#$%&@
Comment by Enric — 8/25/2006 @ 10:45 pm
Blaaah… Houston, we have a problem. Every time I start Allpeers and try to share something, my Firefox crashes… very annoying. Is there a known bug or just my Firefox is stubborn????
Comment by janek — 8/26/2006 @ 12:11 am
The toolbar has to go. If we learned one thing from the Internet Explorer days, its that toolbars are bad. If I have 5-6 extensions installed, and they all have their own toolbars, the browser looks like a dog’s breakfast. There is no need for it. Please get rid of it.
Comment by Chris — 8/26/2006 @ 12:30 am
i don’t know about anyone else, but it’s _really_ slow up/download for me, much moreso than sharing on msn etc. - maybe 6-7 minutes for a 1mb file rather than 1 or less.. am i missing something?
Comment by jeffcapeshop — 8/26/2006 @ 1:16 am
Hello AllPeers - First of all I have to say, exellent program, next I have encountered one small bug in that you are not able to change your details or name that is shown once you are registered, I think you are supposed to be able to, if you are not this would be a handy feature. I have a few small suggestions that you may want to include.
1. The main use for this program for me is being able to take my pc documents anywhere I go on my laptop, and like you say at the moment it is restricted on folders and size at the moment, my suggestion is in order for me to allow my laptop to be recognised I had to sign up with a different email account. What would be very cool is if you could have one account but be able to register more than one computer and say had a seperate group called Me and have to computers listed under that but being able to share like normal.
2. A good feature would also be. I had my downloads setting on firefox to ‘ask me’ and when I went to share a file it downloaded onto my desktop in the AllPeers folder, I then changed my default folder and It went there. My suggestion is to have a setting in preferences to ask you where you want to download things to either by default or everytime you download. This inturn could act like a syncing utility.

So I try to register with my usual email address and am told that there is already a user account using that email address. ‘Odd,’ I think, ‘but if I Restore Account, I should be able to check emal and log in that way.
Well and good except the Restore Account page says, ‘There is no account matching the information you provided.”
Quite the dilemma!
Comment by DeComposer — 8/26/2006 @ 4:33 am
allpeers needs to be as unobtrusive as possible.
totally bad idea to not being able to disable it…and i shouldn’t have to quit my browser either
the toolbar icon should be a lot more functional than it is…use colour coded notifications if possible…and registration is not straightfoward enough
Thanks
