AllPeers 0.54.1 is now available for download from the official Firefox add-ons site. This is the first major user interface upgrade since the original public beta release, and we’re excited about all the new features:

You can now chat with other online AllPeers users with our new instant messaging feature. Right-click on the user in the contact list and choose “Chat with…” or select the same option from the “I want to” menu when viewing the user’s files.

We’ve reworked the view of user’s files to make it easier to track what you’ve received. Everything that is shared with you can be viewed in the user’s inbox (click on their name in the navigator). Click on a message to open it up and see the contents.

In the same view you can see what you’ve shared with a user by clicking on the “Outbox” tab. If the user has already downloaded a file from you, you’ll see the text “Uploaded” in the file’s thumbnail.

The transfer page has also been extended to include an “Uploads” tab. In this tab you can see which files you are actively uploading. Note that the file disappears from the view when the user has finished downloading, so to see which files have been uploaded successfully (as opposed to those that are still in progress) you should use the Outbox as described above.

There are a number of other fixes as well. Based on feedback from our users we’ve moved the forms for sharing, adding contacts, etc. into the navigator so that they don’t take up space on the righthand side of the screen. We’ve fixed the conflict with NoScript that some people were experiencing. Drag-and-drop of images from the web works again (on Windows only) and the context menus now work fine on Mac and Linux (they were a bit flakey before).

We hope that you’ll like this new release and we look forward to your feedback.

UPDATE: TechCrunch’s take on the new version.

  1. Things had been very quiet from your side for some time now, but this looks like a big release. Looking at the number of comments on your blog, support forums and the number of downloads on firefox addons site, it looks that unfortunately interest in allpeers has dropped considerably.
I strongly hope this release works better and is not as buggy as the previous releases.

  2. We were quiet because we were working on v0.54 :-)

On top of the features you will see, we have greatly improved the overall performances of the extension.

You might have the perception that interest has dropped but we’ve been signing up 1 new user every 3 minutes for the past 8 weeks so more and more people are joining AllPeers. Including the 3 who just joined while I was posting this :-)

  3. Hello
Thanks for the very good progress, quite a jump actually !
The major functions I was expecting are there.

This being said, I’m sure Allpeers we’ll dramatically progress in terms of audience as soon as it will be localized ! Then, and only then, the non-geeks (with a great part of non English speakers) will flood Allpeers ;)

So, when will that be ?

    Thanks

  4. I had almost stopped using allpeers, but this release is just perfect, everything looks great on a clean profile with just allpeers extension installed. It is really a big release for you guys.
I will have to try it on my main firefox profile and see how it with my other 50 extensions installed.
Great job guys! I think this would have been the right time to start public beta. Now I can safely recommend allpeers to all my friends.

PS:I just won the allpeers tee-shirt, wanted to thank you guys for that too.

  6. Zaatar: Send an email to cedric at allpeers.com with your size and your preferred tee-shirt (see previous post on the blog) and I’ll see what I can do for you ;-)

Aseem: Thanks. Yes this is a big release but nothing compared to what we are still cooking. Thanks for bearing with us and expect better performances and kick-ass features in the New Year.
