AllPeers Service Shutting Down Today
It is with deep regret that we inform our users, friends and fans that we will be shutting down the AllPeers service today. We are tremendously proud of the product that our team has built, and we remain convinced of the potential of adding social features like file sharing to the web browser. However, we have not achieved the kind of growth in our user base that our investors were expecting, and as a result we are not able to continue operating the service.
The past few years have been an incredible adventure for us. We would like to thank all of the amazing people who have helped us along the way. This includes countless users who provided us with valuable feedback about how to improve our product; the Mozilla community, who has proven to us that “community” is more than just a word when it comes to open source software; the many volunteers who spent hours translating each AllPeers version into fifteen different languages to make it available to non-English speakers across the world; and the friends and family who have supported us as we pursued what undoubtedly seemed like a crazy dream.
Being an entrepreneur is the most rewarding and exhilarating job we can imagine. Being able to build on a vision you have one morning and watch as it grows into reality is quite an experience. Seeing people get excited by what you are building is incredibly gratifying. The praise, devotion and even harsh criticism of the user community is what keeps you going despite long working hours, frequent stress and periods of uncertainty.
When we started working on AllPeers, we knew that it was an ambitious project with no guarantee of success. Such is the nature of any software startup. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Although we are deeply disappointed with the way this adventure has ended, we hope that fear of failure will never prevent us from daring to act on our inspiration.
We have met many many new friends thanks to AllPeers (you know who you are). This is a fantastic silver lining that gives us great comfort. We hope you will stay in touch as we move on to new pastures.
The success of this blog has also been one of the best experiences to come out of AllPeers. We will continue to operate it under the “Peer Pressure” name, posting our random thoughts about the web, the software industry, the evolution of media and whatever else strikes our fancy. We hope you’ll keep on reading. Matt will also continue writing his Just Browsing blog with a focus on web browsers and browser technology.
You haven’t heard the last from us. See you in our next life!

AllPeers is amazing!! You just didn’t advertise it enough to have a tremendous growth. The potential is enormous!! I learned about the service only last week , and since that time had 11 of my friends signed for AllPeers.
The fact that you have to shut down such a useful service sucks….

Hey, this can’t be true… It was such a good idea, and done in a way that even non-geeks could start sharing files and chatting with eachother.
So, what can we do to help you ? how could we help the Allpeers company ? Or how could we make the Allpeers last beyond the Allpeers company ?

That sucks guys, AllPeers had potential to kick much ass, however it seems to be a competitive field. My friends refused to switch from Gigatribe and I finally gave in to them, it’s actually a bit easier to use navigation-wise.

I *love* AllPeers, and I was looking forward for Firefox 3 compatibility. Please, please tell me you’ll be able to release a somewhat Firefox 3 compatible version!
And yes, I support the idea of open sourcing your server-side code to try and preserve this great idea moving.
Best extension ever. Even if this is the end, it was an amazing idea, and all great ideas find a way to persevere ;).

I just signed up for the forum yesterday. Email said I got a reply and went to check today. Can’t even view it. Pathetic that you just discontinued service without any support though. Obviously weren’t in it for anything but the investor’s money.

In my opinion what always prevented wider of the adoption was not offering file syncing. If we could have used the service to sync files between our work and home computers like Foldershare (which is buggy as hell), I think people would have had a personal reason to use it even if their friends didn’t. Sad to you go - it had great potential in this area. I for one was always waiting for this before pushing it to my friends.

I think It would help developers if AllPeers just put the project on SourceForge.net for others to research and develop it further.

I am really sorry for allpeers lost. I agree with some other user that comment the problem was the marketing. Let us agree to recruit 10 people in a 3 month period and apply the same rule to them. If the rule is not satisfied the user gets their account cancel or something. Let do something, the product is really good, the marketing is bad. Also buying options sound good to me.

So sad ! I put allpeer in every Pc I’ve crossed since one year. all my friend which went to firefox recently did it for nothing but allpeers…PLEASE : free the code, give it to MozCorp..it will be a great opportunity for them.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! say it isn’t so! As a file share it was great. as an IM client it worked behind the Corporate firewall where every other IM client was blocked. and then you added torrents to it and I was in heaven. ~SIGH~ looks like i’m back to running 3 seperate apps… well 4 as this was an extension to firefox

Despite the sad AllPeers failure, I’m still convinced that P2P network technologies are the most efficient way to distribute multimedia contents across the Internet, and especially huge HD movies !
For me it appears as an evidence: the diffusion of “full HD” (720 or 1080 pixel height by 1280 or 1920 pixel width screen resolution in 16/9 format, with 24 fps and a bitrate ranging from 8 to 30 Mb/s) on the Internet will not be done using basic streaming or regular downloading (even with the help of CDNs like Akamai, Limewire etc) for cost issues.
The diffusion of HD movies and videos, and the online availability of huge catalogues of movies today available in SD but not yet released, will force the content providers to us peer-to-peer technologies, or other smartly distributed systems allowing to globally optimize the use of IP bandwidth available worldwide. That is exactly the reason why BitTorrent or Mininova have launched their “low cost P2P CDN” offers.

A most regrettable end to a wonderful and extremely useful project. AllPeers has remained one, if not the most, used of my extensions since I installed it. Its ease of use, and efficiency in that use far surpassed anything else like it, indeed, there was nothing else like it. I sincerely hope that this wonderful service may return, and wish the team all the best of luck in whatever ventures they choose to engage in next.

This is really a shame!!! I just found this and it seems almost the only way to share big sized pictures and videos with the family through mail. I have been telling everybody I know about how great this site was…I hope for a revival of Allpeers!

This is too bad. Allpeers was such a good idea, the easiest filesharing system… And within Firefox, no need for another app! I can’t imagine how I will teach my dad how to send me big files, now! Gigatribe and alter are no good to me.

I have not been able to get 2peers.com work up to now. While the first time I installed Allpeers, it worked perfectly from the first second! That was one big big advantage of AllPeers. Together with its ease of use (embedded within Firefox). No need for yet another process running like 2peer.exe .
I’m too sad.
What could the community do to keep Allpeers alive ? and promote it even more ?

That really sucks! Can I get my files back now? You shouldn’t make something work so perfectly and then take it away. I could understand if it had an impossible number of bugs, like Vista or something, but come on! AlPeers was fantastic and filled a very important need: i.e. the ability to send large files over the internet. Sucks! Just Sucks!

I don’t understand a few things:
Allpeers is a vital extension of Firefox. Knowing it’s popularity and radiating effect, how come such a valuable and revolutionnary app can shut down. Where is the conspiracy here.
1)Why there were no warnings of difficulties in the management of allpeers, before standing in front of the grave throwing flowers at the dead.
2)Why Firefow has’nt integrated Allpeers in its core app?
3) Why Firefox team, knowing investment problems has’nt done anything.
4) I’m sad to hear the guy who is just concerned about money and planning. But we are talking about lives of people here, connexion between human beings. Is that nothing for you.
If anything or if there is a Allpeers2, make sure the “project” is sustanaible before ruining the lifes of many people.

I don’t want to use another P2P.
I suggest we don’t use firefox services for one month and use another browser instead.

I agree that Allpeers is an exceptional Firefox extension, that IMHO lacked of proper advertisement. The Allpeers page in Addons.mozilla.org was so poor… Allpeers has never been promoted as a suggested extension. What a pity.
Since it died, I tried many replacement solutions, but none is as convenient… Neither 2peer, nor Gigatribe.
I think everybody but the regular users missed the real difference with Allpeers, it’s huge advantage: it really was “Private P2P for dummies”, in the noble meaning of it. Everybody from my almost-geek son to my mother was able to install it, to use it in a smooth manner.
I’m really looking forward to reading an announcement my Matt or Cedric or someone at Mozilla or whoever saying: “Allpeers not dead”.
How can the architecture be modified so that NO central server is needed anymore? How can all of us be a part of the architecture?
Something big was coming.. but fall over the carpet!

AllPears was a genial idea, unfortunately only idea itself can’t survive. The communication was absolutely underestimated. Even if it was the best firefox addon, I never found it on recommended mozilla addons. You had some user base, why you didn’t use it - to vote, to promote, to make viral marketing. I am so sory - Czech programmers had a big chance to tell the world - hey in the East europe can born great ideas and are great programmers!!!

I’m not part of the Allpeers team, but one of the “very very microscopic” investors in Allpeers (since the first year of developpment);
I totally agree with all of you. AP changed my life, the way I shared things online;
The AP team did a tremendous work, faced a lot of difficulties, and succeeded. But maintaining such a great team, servers & so on, cost a lot.
Let’s face it, the number of users was not high enough. Why all of us, the users, did’nt manage to make it a success using viral marketing ?
How many of your friends & family did you “convert” to use Allpeers ?
I personaly know some people at Allpeers. I can assure you they’re as great in the technical/developmt area than in marketing/business developt.
But their investors hadn’t enough patience…
Let’s face it : Allpeers’s time to market was to early….
But this is the future;
Investors, you’ll regret it

Well, the idea was not bad but there were some limitations.
1) not working on my ubuntu amd 64
2) impossible to use the same account/contacts/shares from different PCs (i.e. at work/at home)
3) impossible to use the same account/contacts/shares from different OSs on same PC. I use a dual boot (win & linux) and I would like to have the same account and shares when I switch from one OS to the other one!

Gianni, Those are good points about the limitations fro AllPeers. The service provided by 2Peer.com does allow you to use the same account/contacts from different PCs and OSs (and you can choose your own browser). Hopefully 2Peer can learn from the limitations in AllPeers.

Peter got it wrong. Podmailing only shares the files you send to your contacts or those you receive.
It works like email except that you can attach folders and files of 5GB or more. Files can be downloaded with Podmailing or BitTorrent or straight http in any browser.

Louis, I didn’t get it wrong. What I meant is that the file reside on the company server with pdmail and hence some others could possibly access them if they wanted… Same problem exists with email. With AllPeers and 2Peer the files never reside on a computer owned by other than those that should have access to it.

OK Peter, sorry for my misinterpretation, I see what you mean now.
Actually the 1st release of Podmailing was pure P2P, and no files were copied on any server. But we ran into the same problems as AllPeers, inherent to this mode of communication. As Matt puts it in “AllPeers: Lessons Learned”:
In addition to the ‘no sources’ issue, our service required people to open ports on their routers, which is way too much to demand from mainstream users - and UPNP port mapping does not work often enough to solve that.
So we designed a scalable infrastructure to relay files, and the service became much more reliable.
BUT then some of our users expressed their regrets of the ultra-private transfers enabled by pure P2P communication. So we decided to restore pure P2P communications as an option. This will be included in the next release of Podmailing. I don’t see a better way of satisfaying everyone: pure P2P for those who can route their ports properly and keep their PCs online all the time, and files relayed on our servers for everyone else.
How do you deal with these issues in 2Peer?

Is 2peer.com swamped? (after signing up, downloading and installing it just keeps displaying “loading…” in the browser UI).
RetroShare was easy to install and use on both Ubuntu and Windows, but it caps file transfer rate to 44KB/s even between your own local LAN machines with no apparent way to change; does anyone know how to uncap this? Thanks. :PC

Is it on or off? After the first announcement about AllPeers shutting down, I got a visual in the usual AllPeers window saying that it was no longer operational. Subsequently I got in place of this noice a list of my bookmarks.
But then lo and behold my AllPeers window came back up complete with contacts including in and out boxes.
Since then it has alternated on and off. Now it seems to be on
What’s up with that? I haven’t tried to use the service since but it looks like it might work.

Sad to read, as I was about to install it again and try it for another go, hoping it was less buggy.
I can think of two reasons why the user base was so low.
Extremely poor advertisement and some releases was extremely buggy.
If you want users, let everyone know you have a product.
If you want users to still be your users, fix more bugs than you create.
