Step #1. Research Your Learners

Your very first step in creating video training courses should always be researching your learners. Start by making sure that the topic you want to cover is useful for them. Simply put, you want to make sure that your topic is something that your learners need. It should be one of their biggest challenges, ideally their primary challenge.

Then, research the type of content your learners prefer. What type of videos do they prefer? This lets you maximize engagement.

Step #2. Do a Cost Benefit Analysis

Next, it’s time to look at your budget and do a cost-benefit analysis. The good news is that if you want to keep costs low, there are plenty of great options. Start with the low-hanging fruit, which is content you already have on hand. For example, look at Zoom recordings or recordings of team meetings.

If that content doesn’t match the topic, take out your smartphone and start recording. Or create screen recordings with the free screen capture software such as Loom.

Step #3. Create an Outline and Script

As you create video training courses, you want to make an outline and script your training. We encourage you to think of the course as a book. You will want to look at the topic overall, then divide it into chapters. These chapters will serve as modules or videos within your course. But how do you break down the entire “book” into “chapters?” The formula is simple. Each video should start with an opening statement or introduction to the topic. Step #5. Integrate Technology

Finally, you are ready to integrate technology, meaning putting your videos into whatever system you will use for distribution. Start by looking at the systems you already have. If you already use an LMS or another piece of tech that could work well, go for it. Just remember that you want to be able to host and distribute the videos on it. Some very low-cost (or free) options include Vimeo or YouTube. Remember that you can make the videos private and require a link to view them.
